How to Create an Anime Aesthetic Room (+ Inspo)

“Moon Prism Power! Make Up!” Familiar with this magical chant? You must have heard it before from Japanese anime shows, specifically the classic series Sailor Moon wherein the main character transforms into their hero mode. One of the biggest cliches in animes, particularly those that cater to teenage girls, is these special transformation sequences. However, just like Usagi Tsukino, you can also transform your room into an anime aesthetic room, magical-style!

Such appealing and soft-hued characteristics are what make the anime aesthetic stand out, especially since it incorporates Japanese animation and comic art styles from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. Essentially, it revolves around the Japanese visual media forms that have existed throughout the decades and feature iconic and popular characters. With the wide range of the anime aesthetic, it tends to overlap with a large variety of aesthetics, specifically pastel and vaporwave.

To our fellow otakus, we may not have a transformation brooch that would magically turn your ordinary room into one straight from a nostalgic anime. But we do have an extensive list of anime aesthetic room ideas that would surely cater to your animated fantasies!

The Anime Aesthetic

The anime aesthetic, also often associated with “kawaii” and “neko,” is a celebration of the Japanese entertainment forms’ increasing prevalence on the internet. Although anime and manga became mainstream in Japan back in the 1980s, the anime aesthetic only regained popularity in 2020 through TikTok. As a matter of fact, the aesthetic mostly appealed to the Western female audience for its dominantly cute features. Hence, it is commonly associated with femininity and delicate colors.

Since the majority of Japanese culture consumers prefer anime and manga that tackle the journeys of magical girls, pastel colors and glitter played a big role in the distinction of the aesthetic. In addition, the anime aesthetic promotes cute gaming equipment, anime edits, and manga drawings. Others would even go the extra mile and lower the quality of their digital photos to replicate the Y2K Japanese animation and comic art styles.

The primary visual of the anime aesthetic is moe characters as they evoke feelings of affection and adoration within viewers. They are always school girls with large eyes, colorful hairstyles, and cute outfits. Another notable visual motif in the anime aesthetic would be sweets. These consist of Japanese-style cakes, macaroons, cotton candy, cookies, and milk tea. Nature-inspired motifs, such as butterflies and cherry blossoms, are also abundant in the anime aesthetic.

Some of the popular anime icons include Sanrio characters, such as Hello Kitty and My Melody, and San-X characters, such as Rilakkuma and Shirokuma. These illustrated cute and child-friendly characters are another one of the anime aesthetic’s unique and recognizable features since they are incredibly basic in design and their light colors are soothing to the eyes. The characters’ simplicity allows them to easily be marketed as merchandise that can be employed in anime aesthetic room decor.

What is Anime Aesthetic Room Decor?

If you think about it, creating an anime aesthetic room is not that difficult, especially when there are anime-inspired products in markets wherever you go. Commonly featured in anime aesthetic rooms are posters of scenes from popular anime series, chibi-styled figurines of favorite anime characters, and bedding sets of anime motifs. Such decorations show the simultaneously obsessive yet cozy feelings that the anime aesthetic conveys.

Physical manga volumes, video game consoles, and kawaii plushies are a few more of the typical anime aesthetic room decorations. Given the aesthetic’s frequent utilization of animal motifs, your room must have certain furniture such as gaming chairs with bunny ears, cushion seats that are paw-shaped, and system units plastered with washi tape with duck patterns. At this point, anything you perceive to be cute and fall under the pastel color palette supplement the anime aesthetic.

When decorating an anime aesthetic room, it is important to know that the vision is determined by one’s personal genre preference. To illustrate, if you are feeling extra mystical, invest in decorations with glitter and sparkles to fully live out the magical girl life. Going back to our Sailor Moon reference from earlier, you can even buy certain merchandise such as the spiral heart moon rod, rainbow moon chalice, and the crystal star compact. It is all about drawing out inspiration from the animes and mangas you love and enjoy so that you can design your ideal anime aesthetic room according to the particular style or theme you like!

Color Palette

As mentioned earlier, the anime aesthetic encompasses a wide range of aesthetics. Hence, it does not only use washed-out colors but bright ones too. With rose pink making it on top of the list of frequently used colors in anime aesthetic rooms, daffodil yellow comes next as it is the perfect complementary color.

Add some hints of cerulean blue and pistachio green to your room for some contrast. Additionally, lilac purple can add a pop of saturation to your room, particularly if you have neon lighting fixtures at hand.

Lighting

Speaking of neon lighting fixtures, it goes without saying that they are one of the most crucial factors in building an anime aesthetic room. Given that neon signs are made of flexible silicon LED strip lights, they can be custom-made to form your favorite anime character.

Of course, neon signs are not the only artificial light source that can brighten up your room. You can also drape fairy lights by your desks or attach them behind your monitor for some backlight that would surely blow your minds. Glowing neko or cat lamps and cute pastel lighting will also look good in your anime aesthetic bedroom.

Walls

What else is a better way of unleashing your inner otaku than by showcasing your merchandise on your walls? Hang tapestries and posters of your favorite anime aesthetic motifs such as sakura flowers, cherry blossoms, and Japanese writing characters. With that, you can obsess over your favorite aspects of the Japanese visual culture. Another affordable decoration that you can stick on your walls would be stickers of cute anime-style characters.

Another way of celebrating your love for anime is through physical manga volumes and video games on your open shelves. Go above and beyond by draping over an anime-patterned cloth on top of the fixture. Do not forget to stack those collectible ball-jointed dolls and funko pops too! Want to fill your room with music? Decorate with wall-mounted CD players and vinyl records so that you can play your favorite J-pop albums as you relax.

Furniture

Every anime aesthetic room calls for cute and soft-edge furniture. Cop that pastel reclining gaming chair that you have been eyeing for a while now. Moreover, cushion seats and tufted rugs in the shape of cute characters, such as Sanrio’s Kuromi and Cinnamaroll, are a great addition to enhance the Japanese vibes in your room. You can also grab a low coffee table or even a warm kotatsu for the winter season to emulate the bedrooms you see in anime!

To accommodate all those monitors that you have been watching your favorite anime franchises on, invest in a white long desk. Somehow, white furniture can balance the desired visual chaos of your merchandise-filled anime room. Decorate with desk mats of that anime scene that lives in your head rent-free. You may also want to purchase an enclosed glass shelf to display your figurines next to your desk.

Bedding

The go-to of anime enthusiasts are bedding sets plastered with the faces of your favorite anime or manga characters. However, sweets and nature are also notable visual markers of the anime aesthetic that you can use. With that said, we recommend that you also buy bedding sets with minimal patterns such as strawberries and teddy bears. If you prefer solid-colored bedding sets, you can layer your bed with pillows and plushies of chibi characters.

Other Decor

With the anime aesthetic anchoring on modern technology, gaming setups play a big role in the enhancement of the aesthetic. Cat-ear headsets, futuristic system units, mechanical keyboards with backlight, wide curved monitors, classic Nintendo consoles, Divoom Ditoo speakers, and bright projectors are some of the hardware that you can invest in to liven up your gaming corner. Also, don’t miss out on some classic handheld gaming consoles to display your otaku-ness!

You can also bring your envisioned anime aesthetic room to life by getting cute pastel organizer crates. These designs can be animals, such as Shiba Inu and Hello Kitty, or Japanese cultural symbols, such as Kanji characters and Kanagawa waves. Keep in mind that your decorations ultimately depend on your genre of choice. As long as they are stylized based on animes and mangas, then they are good to go in your room!
